I Was on the Radio Really Rambling! Listen if you Like

Well I have been grappling with "Who am I?" since I hurt my ankle, stopped teaching dance, changed cities, and genres and jobs, and focused completely on writing and launching my magazine. If you want to hear all my angst on the radio as I'm coddled by three compassionate and funny comedians, on a really fun radio show then check it out! Fun times. I am on at about 15 mins. in.

The Frankie Files: Passing My One Year Mark in Vegas

Well I've been in Vegas over a year now as of September 11. It's a wild and amazing town. The politics though, can really get you down. There is the gaming commission, the hotel security, the overt chauvinism, the very few people who are actually in charge of Vegas, and the endless car accident deaths, to name a few things. Don't get me wrong, I knew I was moving back to a major city (I grew up on Long Beach (was 10 million) 'til age 21, and I've seen what a car-driven life-style looks like. (Vegas has about 2 million residents and millions of tourists). I have had to go back to driving a car after nine years, and it's not one of those things I ever wanted to do again. I moved here for work, and sacrifices must be made. I miss Portland and the biking / walking  lifestyle that went with it, but sadly the lack of opportunities for growth in any way drove me away. Somehow I know I'll perform back there one day though.

Vegas is a huge machine that has international investors and corporations. I also knew that coming in. There is very little in the way of any 'local scene'. This town was founded for tourists passing through, and it's the most important thing here. The development of rural programs or education is the lowest in the nation, proving my point. Getting any sort of 'culture' here is all related to shows. No problem in that department, I've been obsessed with the stage since I was a little girl when I first sang and played violin at a school trip recital at age six, with my twin.

I find myself physically longing for art, like an aching inside. I miss art modeling every single day, and the creativity that students and artists would gain from my poses. Since there are many transient residents and part-time residents, the ability to start an event of this nature also seems far-fetched. The nearest Art Institute is over 14 miles from where I live, and that doesn't work with a commute for me financially. It wouldn't be rewarding. UNLV has a tiny little art department and needs almost no live models. Ouch.

The amazing thing with all that is that at the same time, I am in contact with some of the most amazing performing artists I've ever met here. People who do shows ten or so times per week, like in New York. Many of you, my friends, have asked me how they do the same show all the time, and it's because of the huge amount of tourism which makes up the Strip and Downtown Vegas. Because the audiences changes all the time, they don't have to pander to locals. It's an amazing opportunity for performers to be in front of thousands per week.

Every day is a spectacle here too. You can see things like Blue Man Group skydiving into a hotel lot, amazing light displays, spectacular million dollar productions, and yet - you can't get a date because people hardly really live here. I imagine it's a lot like an island in that respect. But, it's a desert island. At the same time, the gorgeous and one yearish old Smith Center has brought world-class symphony and ballet theater to Vegas, creating an even more international appeal. The fact that it is situated right in Downtown confirms that Downtown Vegas is the next big thing.

There is never a shortage of anything to cover, but I'm still paying the price of being the "new kid in town" in many respects. I was told that the snubbing will last about two years for any newbies. Not getting on a press list is one of those things I've had to deal with occasionally, luckily not frequently. Some huge hotels and event companies are now sending me notices on the regular, and I even get to interview the Reverend Horton Heat in nine days, one of my musical idols. I have met many individual performers that arrange the interview, a little of a back-channel at times, but it works for me. One property in particular was so amazingly rude to me I could hardly believe it (press reading this probably knows who). They are the ones who threw two guys in their "casino jail" for busking/street performing on their property. They don't need the "little guy" to cover them is the main message. Especially when they have huge publications that they advertise with who will write verbatim what they want. You basically won't get much of the real story here in major magazines and papers, with bought-and-paid-for journalists leading the way. The magazines take money for ads, the reporters write "good reviews" of the show, end of story. But there are a ton of great shows to review here, and I'm getting to them one by one.

I've found a great apartment now, but it took me two apartments to get here. The housing can be fairly cheap, as well as the cost of living if you stay out of tourist areas, but no one will ever talk about the newer problem they have here with roaches. During the last couple years there was a problem (global warming?) with the fact that the weather never reached freezing, which in warmer climates is what kills that type of bug each year, and makes them start reproduction over. Sadly many properties haven't reacted properly and if you live anywhere in Spring Valley or North Vegas, you're going to get bugs. They don't tell you that on the tour. My 2nd apartment (which I moved to from a single after 9 mos.) was infested. I broke my lease immediately- thank God I hadn't really moved in. It was outrageous. I mean health code material. I was in shock and it came at a very busy time in my life, making it very inconvenient to leave my stuff in storage, stay in their not infested model apt., and move again - uggg. Let's just say I've got PTRD (post traumatic roach disorder). A tip for those moving to Vegas: If they say we get a 'few' bugs and we can spray for you anytime- they've got bugs, no matter how nice the amenities. Do your diligent homework with online apt. reviews.

It's a process of getting settled in many ways here, which is probably a tiny bit slower now because I'm not 20 years old anymore (as of yesterday haha). In essence I'm fairly settled in and about to publish my second eBook in the series of the Best of Frankie Tease Magazine. Never mind that some shows I've wanted to cover weren't available, I've gotten a lot of amazing interviews and will again this year be covering Viva Las Vegas  (end March) as press, yipee!

Being a performer is a bit on hold right now as I completely focus on content creation and marketing of the ebook series, and of Frankie Tease Magazine via frankietease.com. It's very demanding and rewarding. I miss being on stage, attempting to write new jokes (brain so full of other material, can't do it), and I really miss performing burlesque, tasseling and my headstand act. I just don't see the point of performing at a local bar in Vegas, when I did a lot of that in Portland already. I did my time in bars.

My knowledge of stage though is a huge boon in interviewing and reviewing the talent that is so top notch here on the Strip and Downtown Vegas. You just don't see world-class level entertainers every day unless you are in Vegas, there's nothing like it. Nothing. And the changes that are constant through every season here are amazing.

I have a lot of stories to tell about what it's like, but now's not the time for that as I'm so focused on the event interviews and reviews. I have already been told by several artists that they'd love to be in one of my shows if I ever start producing again. That's exciting. Maybe in 2013 after the book series Vol.2 is launched? Not really sure. For now, it's all about the event photography (with my new camera capable of 10mp shots woo hoo), reviews, and interviews. I'm lovin' it.

I just felt the need to keep in touch with you readers who know me as a performer, I have been on hiatus. It has taken me a complete year to heal the ankle injury I did back in Portland (on roller skates, not stage-duh!) and be able to walk right, let alone dance yet. That has limited my income because I've been a ballroom dance instructor for 15 years, and a stripper for four- all gone. Thank god I took writing classes and have been passionate about writing since age 18 or so.

As far as comedy I've been covering amazing stars, and hope to continue. I have written and performed an entire new set both clean and blue. But, I found no one wants anything raunchy here AT ALL. No cussing, nothing but clean is desired. Even if you're clean, that doesn't mean you will have many places to perform here other than freebies. Yawn. With as many years as I've had on stage, and the stage presence I've developed, it's rough for me to really regress to any beginner level having hosted (with comedic element) many events since San Francisco and Hollywood days circa '97. Sheez, I was in front of 800 people in '95 at the Long Beach Arena. After the decision to postpone/cancel my "Not So Nude" comedy tour due to finances, I've put performing comedy on hold. Everybody knows this is a rough time to tour, but I didn't even get to the booking phase. It just wouldn't have worked. I know better than to depend upon monies earned at each venue- having produced many shows. And of course, travel expenses are crazy to deal with.

At this time I'm enjoying a happy balance of getting to know many layers of Vegas and covering world-class comedy, burlesque, and music as a columnist. It can be really amazingly fun to be press at times! I'm earning my place, year two!
Below is an example of the amazingness. C'mon I'm glowing in this photo with one of my actor heroes Richard E. Grant. (p.s. yes I've gone back to my natural color of red hair).

Me, pictured with amazingly talented British Screen Actor and Director: Richard E.Grant

Richard sent a delightful email to me late night after the show:
Great to meet you tonight at ABSINTHE.
I will be featured in a six hour, six part documentary series about famous hotels in London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Will air in the Fall on BBC Worldwide.

All the best
Richard x
And then I fainted. I've been a fan of his films for soooooooo long!

I hope all you readers are having a stress-free holiday season, and that you can ring in the new year with great style and frivolity. I also hope that what I'm producing in articles is highly informative and entertaining to you, even if you aren't here in Vegas. I humbly ask for your support to buy my ebook (only $3.99), and I also hope you will be patient with me as I pursue other forms of the Entertainment business besides being the talent. For now my stage is each article. My variety show production is my ebook, and the booking of such talent in the past has helped me create a good balance in the book I believe. I hope you enjoy my word-circus and that it stimulates your inner Vegas.

Yours, Frankie.

Teaser Quotes from "Best of Frankie Tease Mag. Vol.1" and Vol.2 Update

BEST OF FRANKIE TEASE MAGAZINE VOL.1

Well hello readers. It's been a while since we've talked about the eBook series I launched this year. Lets take a second to chat about what you've missed if you haven't read the book yet, via some favorite interview quotes from Vol. 1:

Lisa Lampanelli:
When asked if people understand her comedy:
"I have this thing: never complain, never explain."
Dirty Martini
When asked about how she got into Burlesque:
"From the time I was in college, I was working with some of these ideas. Even before college, my choreographic pieces and some of my solo and group work pieces were very Burlesque."
Director Mark Mori of "Bettie Page Reveals All"
When asked what it was like for Bettie fans viewing his film:
"When I saw their reaction, how emotional they were when they saw the film and how connected - they felt connected with Bettie before the film - but then to actually basically come as close as you can to meeting and encountering and having interaction with Bettie - their emotional reaction - that really meant so much to me."
The Moonlight Howlers
When asked if their albums have original or cover songs Raffael Weatherly said:
"Everything that we've recorded and done on albums is all original material except 'Walking in the Sand' (by George “Shadow Morton” of the Shangrilas)."
Imogen Kelly
When asked what one of her favorite things about Burlesque Hall of Fame was:
"The dressing room was really amazing thanks to Coco Lectric.
Si Cranstoun
When asked about his famous "Nappy Brown" bassist Stewart Pannaman:
"Stew is the knowledge, he's the man. Seriously. Apart from being a great Double Bass & Electric Bass player, there ain't a thing Stew don't know about the Rockin' Scene & Vintage R&B."
Melody Sweets
When asked where she grew up:
"I grew up in California until I was around ten, and then I moved around a lot. East Coast, West Coast, and then I moved to New York in 1999, because I wanted to party like it was 1999 like Prince said."
Jonathan Joffe
When asked how he chose film score composer Johnny Summers:
"When Johnny came to the sort-of interview about composing for the film, I knew he was the guy. He brought his trumpet, and five different kinds of mute. So that's it, he understood. He didn't come with a synthesizer, a cd. It was a very interesting experience, and he put a lot of hard work into composing the music for this film."

Michelle L'Amour

When asked what her new routine she performed at Burlesque Hall of Fame 2012 "Atlas" was about:
"It's about the struggle and acceptance of your own power. It's about accepting your own power and how difficult that can be."

Then there are the many reviews which are in the book...
Check out the full description of everyone included via the ebook page at http://www.frankietease.com/p/ebooks.html, our book series perma-link. My first effort (Vol.1) contained 30 print size pages, approximately 58 pages in eBook form. The next book in the series will be almost double the size as will all others in the future of the series, and still there will be no ads in the book. It's a book, not a magazine. Editorial is king (though you can advertise on the mag's website).

But what is planned for the new book that's different from Volume 1? First, there will be a lot more content that has never been published. As more people are aware of the magazine and eBook series, we are invited to review and interview bigger and more spectacular events all the time. This means more  choices for the eBook, wonderful pictorials, editorials, interviews, and reviews with shockingly famous stars who play Vegas year-round. The city of Vegas never sleeps.

Second, we have a quality camera and the will to go get amazing shots that are high rez. Though friend photographers contributed to the last book, there will be more Frankie Tease Magazine photos directly from event access to show you we were there, and what was great about it. The photos are going to blow you away. There is the Viva Las Vegas previews, the confirmed interviews with Frankie Reverend Horton Heat (Texas), Moreno (Stratosphere), Murray Sawchuck (Tropicana), Perle Noir (New Orleans), and the large feature on famous mob daughter Amy Hanley's (Sin City Rules) couture line for 2013, as well as Winter in Venice at the Venetian pictorial. These are just the tail-end of the excitement I've been up to for the June-Dec. Vol. 2 eBook. It's going to be amazing.

Right now I want to talk to new-to eBook or never-heard-of-an eBook people. It's the wave of the future. No print, no waste, and extremely accessible from anywhere. Let's face it, how many times did you wish you had great content to check out while at the airport or non-internet accessible moments? This series is great for that. Your tablet, phone, or computer can access the eBook, and with some vendors, like Copia, you can even pass notes to friends about articles. Most importantly, if you are going to turn a friend or family member on to great new artists by sending the eBook as a gift, you can do it in a click. They in turn, will receive the email to access their eBook delivery. Some services like Amazon even allow you to loan the eBook to a friend for a week, (like real live books).

To those who have read Vol. 1, Thank you and I sincerely hope you enjoy the effort we are putting in to the series Volume 2 (we is me and my helpers). Collect all the books, with a click. They are going to remain affordable at a great under $10 value of $3.99. The effort to show you around fabulous Las Vegas in my second year here will be noticeable  Including: Interviews, Reviews, News, Photos, Burlesque, Comedy, Culture, and Music. Frankie Tease Magazine and the Best of Frankie Tease Magazine eBook series are here to..."Stimulate your Inner Vegas."
The information and eBook content isn't just for those in Las Vegas, nor just for those who visit Las Vegas. The languages the eBook is available in and the events and artists covered are international and for world-wide readers.

An Open Letter to Tonya Kay Who Truly Made My Day

I had the pleasure to see a live show at the Palms involving Lalas Burlesque Troupe Sept. 2012. I absolutely was floored by the quality, level of talent and originality of one TV star in the show: Tanya Kay. I wrote a detailed review of the show for my Mag. ---> HERE.

The woman has been on "House" for god's sake, among many other very well-known projects. But one day I was looking for info online and came across her blog. Well after the show, like a couple months I found that she had posted a love note to me using my quote about her for the show. Her post is here. HERE.

What moved me was when she wrote "Words like Frankie Tease's let me know I’ve connected as a burlesque dancer, a performing artist, and a human being, that’s what it’s all about."

I mean if you know how long I've been a performer in all the genres, how many people I've appeared in front of and how many people I've seen and introduced, you'd know then that she spoke directly to my heart.

Thanks Tanya Kay for being sooo fricken' awesome!

My photo of Tanya Kay while she performed at the Palms with the Lalas Sept. 2012 in Vegas. That was the troupe's second appearance at the Palms Lounge in Vegas.

Just for fun, a survey of Las Vegas Signs Oct. 2012

Recently I've been looking at the neon signs here in Las Vegas in relation to the history of the city. I was covering the Vegas neon sign topic because of the opening of the renovated Neon Museum (read that article on my Mag here http://www.frankietease.com/2012/10/las-vegas-neon-museum-boneyard.html). It was great fun. In my studies I took a few extra photos around the city, and here are some modern and historic signs that are strewn about town, by daylight.

All photos by me, Frankie Tease.
